MSA presents: A Latesummer Night's Dream
Merced Symphony kicks off its 65th anniversary season with a concert focused on music inspired by famed English playwright William Shakespeare! From the pucky comedy Midsummer Night’s Dream, to the romantic tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare has inspired millions with his words, and likewise has inspired composers throughout the centuries. Mendelssohn grew up acting out Shakespeare when he was a child, we start the season with his brilliant Overture to Midsummer Night’s Dream, written when he was only 17 years old. And members of Merced Shakes join us to tell us the story of Romeo and Juliet as depicted by Prokofiev. Renowned pianist John Wilson rounds out the evening with a powerful and spritely First Piano Concerto of Shostakovich.
